My husband and I plan to travel internationally in a few months, so we’re trying to spend as little as possible this summer. Then, we can use all the money we usually spend on recreation during the summer months on our upcoming vacation. We thought we might face a boring summer, but we’ve found many free summer activities for couples! Here are the ones we’ve already enjoyed and plan to do over the next few months.

Free Summer Activities for Couples

If you’re looking for free activities, Google your town name and “free activities,” “free things to do,” or “free concerts.” You’ll likely come up with a long list, especially if you live in or near a bigger town.

Shakespeare in the Park

This event is on our list for July. Two different Shakespeare plays will be performed five nights a week  for several weeks. We plan to attend both performances—Measure for Measure and Romeo and Juliet.

Outdoor Get Togethers and Movie Watching with Friends

This summer, we’ve already enjoyed spending time with friends. One of our friends invites couples to their house, where we relax in the backyard, talking and making s’mores until sunset. Then, her husband sets up a project, and we watch a movie outdoors projected onto the wall of her garage. Everyone has a fun evening, and it’s free.

Concerts

Our local symphony also has free outdoor performances. We haven’t attended one yet but will in the next few weeks. Going to the free concert will help us decide if we want to pay for tickets to the symphony in the future.

Festivals

We live in an area that has a festival almost every weekend. We have already attended the Cherry Blossom Festival and plan to go to many more including the Strawberry Festival, The Pirate Festival, and several music festivals.

Parades

There’s also a plethora of parades this summer. We attended the Pride parade and want to go to the Juneteenth parade. I used to think parades were for little kids, but we enjoyed going and people-watching.

Hikes

We’ve enjoyed hiking all winter, and now that the trails are dry and the temperatures are moderate, we’re finding hiking even more enjoyable. Many trails are within 30 minutes of our home, so we don’t have to hike the same route twice unless we want to.

Walking

Now that the day stretches so much longer and the sun doesn’t set until 9 p.m., my husband and I have started walking a mile around our neighborhood in the evening. Not only do we get exercise, but we enjoy spending time together in nature and telling one another about our days.

Final Thoughts

When we decided to try to save money this summer, we were worried that we wouldn’t be able to find free summer activities for couples. However, we’ve found the opposite to be true. We’ve discovered plenty of fun activities that cost nothing, so we’ll have more money to spend on our international trip this fall.

MANAGE YOUR MONEY TOGETHER

Here are some simple guidelines for DINKS to build wealth:

1) Collaborate: Meet regularly to talk about money, set goals together, track and monitor them.

2) Understand and respect your partner. Take time to understand your partners values about money.

3) Watch the numbers. Get a budget, monitor your spending and track your net worth.

4) Max your retirement. Maximize contributions to your tax deferred retirement accounts.

5) Invest in stock. Stocks perform better than bonds or cash.

6) Avoid high interest debt. Credit cards and title loans are financial cancer.

7) Diversify. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
