We read a lot of internet message boards. Everyone once in a while, someone posts a question about H&R Block, usually because they need help with a tax problem and are wondering if H&R Block can assist.

I strongly advise that our readers stay away from H&R Block. Here is why I think so.

1) The company has been criticized for the following
selling investments guaranteed to loose money
lying about their loan products

2) H&R block has miscalculated their own state taxes for 2004 and 2005. Shouldn’t a tax preparation company figure their own taxes correctly?

3) The company has low barriers for hiring. This suggests that customers who use H&R Block’s services are likely to be given low quality advice or may be targeted for identity theft. The company’s employees have been implicated in identity theft crimes in New York and a recent promotional mailing inadvertently gave personal information about the company’s customers to the general public. Finally, I’ve heard bad things about Block from my friends and people I’ve done business with. The major complaint seems to be that H&R Block’s staffers offer bad or incompetent advice.

Things may improve for the company in the future, but until then, I advise our readers to stay away.

Best,

James

MANAGE YOUR MONEY TOGETHER

Here are some simple guidelines for DINKS to build wealth:

1) Collaborate: Meet regularly to talk about money, set goals together, track and monitor them.

2) Understand and respect your partner. Take time to understand your partners values about money.

3) Watch the numbers. Get a budget, monitor your spending and track your net worth.

4) Max your retirement. Maximize contributions to your tax deferred retirement accounts.

5) Invest in stock. Stocks perform better than bonds or cash.

6) Avoid high interest debt. Credit cards and title loans are financial cancer.

7) Diversify. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
